Happy Christmas

That is genuinely the whole point of this one.

If you are reading a web design blog on Christmas morning, we hope it is because something scheduled it into your feed rather than because you are hiding from a relative. Either is fine, honestly.

Thank You

To every client who trusted us with their website this year — some of you for the first time, several of you for the seventh or eighth — thank you. Building things for people who care about their business is a good way to spend a year, and we are aware that it is not the default experience of working life.

Thank you to the people who rang up with a problem at an inconvenient hour and were patient while we sorted it. To the ones who sent honest feedback rather than polite feedback. To everyone who recommended us to somebody else, which remains the way most of our work arrives and the compliment we take most seriously.

Thank you to the other small businesses around Belfast and across Northern Ireland who shared work, passed on leads, answered questions and generally behaved like a community rather than a market. It has been a hard few years for a lot of independents here, and the ones still going are still going partly because of each other.

And thank you to everyone who read something here and found it useful. We write these to be genuinely helpful rather than to rank for something, and the emails saying "we did the thing in that article and it worked" are the best part of it.

The Year Behind

It has been a year of real change in how people find businesses online — more answers given without a click, more decisions made before anyone reaches a website, more noise generated by machines. We wrote about what actually changed last week, if you want the longer version.

The short version is that the businesses that did well were the ones being straightforwardly, visibly real: proper photographs, honest prices, named people, current information, and a phone somebody answers. That was true before and it is more true now.

Which is a reassuring conclusion, we think. The advantage went to substance rather than to whoever moved fastest on the latest thing.

Today

We are closed, and so should you be if you can manage it.

The emails will keep. The website is fine on its own — and if you did the wind-down checklist before you finished, it will look after your customers perfectly well without you for a week.

If you own a small business, you have earned a day where nobody needs anything from you. Take it.

And Then

We are back in the new year, and we will pick things up on 1 January with something about the year ahead. Between now and then there is a quieter week that is always busier online than people expect, but that is a problem for another day.

For now: happy Christmas from all of us at Amigo Studios. We hope it is a good one, that whatever you are eating is excellent, and that nothing important breaks until at least the fourth of January.
